The Life Span Institute Autism Training Program: Respite Provider

Respite Provider Training Structure and Description

Service Overview

Program Information

Children with Autism require consistency across environments and providers. While this level of provider does not include the intensity of support provided by the Intensive Individual Support provider, these individuals still require enough information to be able to implement the behavior plan; therefore Respite Providers need to be familiar with the terms used by professionals and consultants that develop programs for the clients.

Training consists of two (2) components; online informational tutorials and a 3 hour workshop. Each component will be outlined below:

Online Informational Tutorials

Ten online tutorials are included in the training. These tutorials include information about autism and the principles of behavior. In addition, these tutorials provide information on how to:

  • (a) increase appropriate behavior
  • (b) shape new behavior
  • (c) record data and graph behavior
  • (d) read programs
  • (e) employ strategies defined by the Autism Specialist to decrease the probability of challenging behaviors and implement plans for handling challenging behaviors once they have occurred
  • (f) conduct the teaching sessions
  • (g) incorporate family members and peers to facilitate generalization of skills across environments and (h) facilitate the development of friendships. Each online tutorial takes between 1-3 hours to complete. A sample schedule is listed below.

Workshop (3 hours)

During this workshop respite providers will receive additional instruction on how to implement behavior plans. Activities will include break-out sessions where trainees will read about real-world scenarios and answer questions based on a behavior plan. Respite providers will also learn how to record narrative data and how to determine what information needs to be reported to the team. Finally, Respite providers will receive access to additional educational sources allowing them to engage in independent study, should they wish to begin working toward becoming an Intensive Individual Support provider. Workshop access will be provided via webcam, teleconferencing, telemedicine technology, and/or other distance learning technologies.
