Intensive Individual Support Training Structure and Description

Intensive Individual Support (IIS) Providers are responsible for the majority of instruction for the children served by the Kansas Autism Waiver. Thus, the IIS providers must be skilled in all aspects of teaching and managing the behavior of young children with autism (under the supervision of the Autism Specialist). Behavioral intervention is systematic and precise; therefore IIS providers must also be familiar with the terms used by professionals and consultants that develop programs for the clients.  Because of the need for an increase in both the knowledge and the skills of trainees, the training encompasses both an online/lecture component and an experiential component in which trainees gain experience implementing evidence-based interventions. Additionally, trainees have the opportunity to observe and participate in on-the-job training sites where they will see and use the skills they have just learned in a real world setting.

(1) Online Tutorials/Interactive Lecture

Pre-Post Assessments: Training modules have been developed and piloted with over 100 individuals working with families to provide language and early skill development for children and youth with autism (Heitzman-Powell & Buzhardt, 2005). The modules require approximately 20 hours of participation with learning evaluated using pre-post assessments. Each online training module should be completed prior to coming in for Skill Fluency/Clinic Training.  Each module will then be covered in an interactive classroom session.  If a trainee scores 90% or higher on the pre-test, these modules are not required.

(2) Skill Fluency/Clinic Training

(2a) Clinic-based experiential learning consists of the application of knowledge from modules in a clinical setting. This second component of training occurs for approximately 2.5 hours per day for each day the trainees are at the training site. Staff provides (a) modeling of skill teaching or behavioral reduction strategy, (b) supervision of the trainee practice with the child with autism, and (c) guided feedback on the trainee’s performance. Trainees work with the KCART staff as well as other trainees to learn teaching procedures, data collection and management, and how to follow instructional and behavioral programs written by the child’s autism specialist with input from the team.

For each session, trainees will be assessed on: a) knowledge of the program description, b) reinforcer assessment prior to introducing the task, c) fluency with task presentation, d) contingent use of reinforcement on the specified schedule, e) follow-through with prompting procedure as defined in the teaching program, f) prompt fading, g) data collection, h) graphing, and i) overall skill fluency. A trainee’s skill fluency is assessed on overall opportunities to respond and is required to be, at minimum, an 80% accurate performance in order to successfully complete the training.

(2b) On-the-job training consists of additional applications of knowledge and brief clinical experience at a selected job site (homes, clinics, schools). This second component of training occurs for approximately 3 hours per day, for each of the training days.  Modeling and supervision is provided by staff at the job sites.  Team members may consist of parents, therapists, and clinicians serving children and youth with autism. The goal is to provide additional hands on training and supervised experiences in quality sites with well experienced behavior analysts and teachers. On-the-job-training provides additional time with new children and programs.
